As we age our bones become weaker, brittle and can be prone to fractures and breaks, which can be proven to be DANGEROUS.
There seems to still be the myth flying around that as a FEMALE , you could end up looking “manly”. Females build muscle differently than men, we have less testosterone and also would need to fill up on a s**t load of protein ! It’s a lot harder for us to build muscle . Resistance training builds curves , builds strength, and as long as carried out with proper form , there is no reason why it shouldn’t be part of your training regime.
Below are 5 reasons why you should be incorporating resistance training into your regime
1. Builds STRENGTH
2. Improves BONE HEALTH – stronger bones . Improves bone density which is IMPORTANT for females, as we age we see a decline in oestrogen, we causes our bones to become weaker and brittle.
3. Lowers RISK of injury – for example improves BALANCE.
4. Muscle maintenance
5. It’s FUNCTIONAL. Applies to daily life. Which again in turn, lowers risk of injury.
If you are a BEGINNER, it is good to begin with BODYWEIGHT exercises , to work on form and technique before moving on to weights or adding in weights. Examples include squats, press ups, tricep dips, and step ups via a bench. Using just our body weight, you can get an effective work out in. Resistance bands ALSO are great to use in your training regime and for muscle ACTIVATION. Check out my article on TRAINING WITH RESISTANCE BANDS.
